The first "School's out for play" event was at Culvers House Primary School in the London Borough of Sutton on 22nd September 2006 and served a multitude of purposes.

The school already had a playful approach towards learning and took pride in its creative curriculum, striving to ensure that the children enjoyed their learning. Emma Walford, deputy headteacher was amazed by the impact of the day,

"When I first had the seed of this special day I had no idea of the impact it would have on the children's learning and creativity."

Lots of work had previously been put into the school to help manage the behaviour of pupils during lunchtimes and to assist midday supervisors in taking on the role of play workers rather than police. Play theory and practical sessions had not had the desired affect and ideas were drying up when a flyer sparked the idea of a whole school day of play to model to staff how play times could look. The main aims of the day were increasing pupil enjoyment of break and lunch times, improving relationships between staff and pupils and increasing staff involvement in play activities.
